Blackstone is an inexpensive, natural, dead black cutting material. It's great for backing opal doublets, creating bases for statuary and anything else that requires a solid black lapidary material. Cabochons, carvings and beads created from Blackstone will have a satin finish, because it doesn't take a full polish. Random pyrite crystals can be found in Blackstone which produce an interesting contrast in finished products.
Blackstone cuts evenly and can be finished with diamond, tin and aluminum oxide. Approximate Mohs hardness 4 to 5.
