Calcite is the gemstone form of calcium carbonate and often erroneously called "onyx". Calcite comes in many patterns and colors. Rainbow calcite has beautiful patterning in various colors and cuts fine cabochons. Calcite is a soft stone, so it is not a good choice for ring stones. Rainbow calcite cuts easily and takes a polish with diamond or tin oxide. Adding vinegar to your oxide polish may help produce a better polish. Mohs hardness 3.
