Jet is essentially hard coal. It's light, cuts very quickly with diamond
tools, but can also be cut with hand files. It is a good
solid black material for inlay, intarsia, small carvings and cabochons.
Jet polishes easily with tin oxide,
and a higher polish can be obtained with Zam, or other wax-based polishing compound. Mohs hardness 2.5 to 4.
