Meerschaum is the common name for the mineral sepiolite. It is the classic material used for the bowls of European pipes. Meerschaum is extremely easy to carve, so standard files and knives are needed to shape it. Final polish can be produced on meerschaum just by burnishing it. Meerschaum can also be polished with white rouge, or by coating it with carnuba wax. Great carving material for beginners and experts alike.
