Rainbow Pyrite Rough
Rainbow pyrite occurs as a drusy coating fractures in clay-like nodules. The substrate is very soft, so stones cut from this material often have a backing glued to the stone. This also helps make the substrate more stable and creates a flat bottom for the cabochon. The top of cabochons cut from rainbow pyrite are the natural surface and not sanded or polished. Approximate Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5, but the substrate is very soft.
