Rhodonite is a manganese silicate. It is a beautiful deep pink material with veins of black manganese oxide running through it.
The outside of rhodonite rough has a thin veneer of manganese oxide, which makes it look like an uninteresting black rock. We have photos of rhodonite slabs and a finished cabochon to show what this material looks like on the inside.
Rhodonite has the reputation of being difficult to polish, but we have found that it polishes well with diamond. Mohs hardness 5.5 to 6.5.

Brazilian
Rhodonite Rough - $2.00/pound
This material has lots of manganese oxide (the black part of rhodonite). However, most of the pink portion of this material is quite gemmy. If you don't mind "slicing and dicing" to get to the good, clean pink areas, this Brazilian Rhodonite rough is a very good deal. Rhodonite has the reputation of being difficult to polish, but we have found that it polishes well with diamond. | ||
