Verdite is a member of the mica group that is often used for African carvings. Although it's a member of the mica group, it has no cleaveage and therefore is a breeze to carve. Verdite can be easily worked with woodworking files and saws and takes a fantastic polish with tin oxide. The green coloring of verdite is unusual for carving material.
Verdite rough is no longer being exported outside Africa and is now difficult to obtain. We may not be able to get more of this rough when our current supply is gone.
Mohs hardness 3.
